How much does a direct cremation cost in the UK

A direct cremation with us costs £1,295. It is a fixed price, not a starting price, and it is the figure on the invoice. This guide sets out what it pays for, what it does not, and what a cremation costs across the UK, so you can read anyone’s price the same way.

What the £1,295 covers

Everything a direct cremation needs, in one figure:

• Collection of your loved one from a hospital, a home, a care home or a hospice, at any hour, as a standard collection
• Their care at our chapel of rest in London or in Nottinghamshire until the day of the cremation
• A simple coffin, suitable for cremation
• The cremation fee at the crematorium, City of London or Babworth
• The paperwork for the cremation, done with you, and the crematorium’s booking
• The ashes returned to you in a container or an urn

There is no service at the crematorium and no one from the family attends, because that is what a direct cremation is. Direct cremation step by step walks through each of the items above in the order they happen.

What the price does not cover

Two things, both optional, and one that is outside anyone’s control.

A viewing at our chapel of rest costs £150. It is an hour with the coffin for the immediate family, before the cremation, and it is added only if you ask for it.

An urgent collection from a home costs £250. A standard home collection is included; the £250 is for a collection inside a fixed short window.

Doctor’s and coroner’s fees, where a death involves them, are set by the doctor or the coroner and passed on at cost. Since the medical examiner system began in England and Wales in September 2024 the old cremation doctors’ fees have largely gone, so for most families this line is nil.

That is the complete list. Nothing else is billed.

How much does a cremation cost across the UK?

SunLife’s Cost of Dying Report 2026, the survey the industry itself quotes, puts the average cost of a direct cremation in the UK at £1,628. The same report puts a traditional attended cremation at £4,200 and a traditional attended funeral overall at £4,510, before the wake, the flowers and the notices, and a simpler attended cremation, with the less chosen extras left out, at £3,518.

Those are averages of what people paid, not list prices, and they vary by region; London is consistently the most expensive part of the country for any kind of funeral. What they tell you is the shape of the market: a direct cremation is roughly a third of the price of an attended one, and the difference is the service, the hearse, the limousines and the funeral director’s time on the day, none of which a direct cremation has.

Why a direct cremation costs less

Four things are absent from the bill. There is no ceremony at the crematorium, so no chapel booking and no time slot to pay for. There is no hearse or following car. There is no embalming, which an attended funeral with a viewing usually involves. And there is no burial plot, which in a city can cost more than the whole of a direct cremation on its own.

What is not absent is the care of your loved one between collection and cremation. That is the same whichever kind of funeral you choose, and it is the part of the price you should ask any provider about, because it is the part a headline figure hides.

Reading a competitor’s price

Every funeral director in the UK has been required since 2021 to publish a standardised price list, and a direct cremation provider’s headline price should match it. The three questions that separate one £1,300 from another are these. Is collection from a home included, or only from a hospital? Is there a charge for returning the ashes to you? And where will your loved one be cared for, and how far from home is the crematorium? Ask them of anyone, including us.

Help with the cost

What you pay, and when

The £1,295 is agreed on the first call and confirmed in writing. You pay once, and the figure does not move between the call and the invoice, whichever hospital or home we collect from and whichever of our two crematoria your loved one goes to.
