How much does a repatriation cost with Newrest Funerals?

There is a price on the Newrest Funerals website, £1,195, and it is worth being clear about what it covers. It is a direct cremation, which is a UK funeral without a service. It is not a repatriation. For a repatriation they ask you to send an enquiry or book a callback, and no figure appears anywhere.
That matters more than it looks, because the number a reader carries away is the one they saw. It is easy to leave a website having quietly budgeted for a piece of work that is not the one in front of you.
You will not need to fly out, or post anything abroad
Bringing someone across a border is a different job from arranging a funeral here, and the difference is almost entirely paperwork. A doctor certifies. A registrar records. A mortuary prepares and releases. A consulate authorises. An airline accepts. Each has its own document, its own language and its own order of doing things.
We handle every step of it, in the local language, from here. You will not be asked to fly out, to queue at a register office abroad, or to post original certificates to another country.
Check the insurance before you pay for anything
Before you commit to any figure, find out whether it is already covered. Many travel policies include repatriation, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do as well, though a good number do not and the wording rarely makes it plain.
We will read the policy with you and handle the claim, so you pay only for whatever the insurer does not. There is no charge for that, and it is the thing families most often find out about too late to use.
One price, itemised, and nothing added afterwards
Our repatriation figure is all-inclusive and it is broken down, so you can see the preparation, the coffin, the flight, the documents, the consular fees and the coordination as separate lines rather than one number to be taken on trust.
It is free, it takes about ten minutes, and it is a price for the job you actually have rather than for a different service that happens to be cheaper.
We will not claim to be the cheapest, because until we know where your loved one is neither of us knows what this costs. We will tell you that the figure we quote is the figure you pay.
What we do while your loved one is in our care
We arrange the washing and the embalming and restore a natural, peaceful appearance. That work is done to the standard the receiving country requires, not only the one the airline asks for, because those are two separate tests and both have to be passed.
Your loved one travels in a sealed transport coffin, by road or in the hold of a scheduled flight. The travel papers are issued by the authorities where the death happened rather than carried in a passport, and their format differs from one country to the next.
What happens once they are home
We meet the aircraft and oversee the transfer, then hand your loved one into the care of the funeral director you have chosen, anywhere in the UK. If a cremation is planned here, the coroner authorises it first and we handle that step so the date does not move.
There is no need to register the death a second time in this country. It can be recorded with the General Register Office if you would like a UK record, and we will tell you whether it is worth doing in your case.
If a direct cremation is genuinely what you need, we arrange those ourselves for a fixed £1,295, and we will say so rather than sell you a repatriation you did not want.

How much does it cost to repatriate a body to the UK?
It depends on the country, the flight and the paperwork each authority requires, so a single number quoted in advance is a guess. The £1,195 on the Newrest site is a direct cremation price rather than a repatriation one. We will cost your actual route and send a free itemised figure, usually inside about ten minutes, covering the coffin, the preparation, the documents, the consular fees and the transport.
What is the difference between a direct cremation and a repatriation?
A direct cremation is a UK cremation without a service, arranged and completed here. A repatriation means bringing someone across a border, which brings in consular paperwork, embalming to the receiving country's standard, a suitable coffin and an airline booking. They are different pieces of work at very different prices, which is why the two figures should never be read across.
How long does it take to bring someone home?
Usually 2 to 7 days. The flight is rarely the delay. What sets the pace is how quickly the authorities where the death happened will issue and release documents, and that varies a good deal country by country. We will give you a realistic picture of your own case on the first call.
Does travel insurance cover repatriation to the UK?
Often, though not always, and the wording is rarely obvious. Many travel policies include repatriation cover, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do too. We will read the policy with you and handle the claim, so you only pay for whatever is not already covered.
Do I have to travel abroad to arrange it?
No. We deal with the doctor, the local registrar, the mortuary and the consulate where your loved one is, in the local language. You will not be asked to fly out, sit in a foreign register office or post original certificates abroad. The whole thing can be arranged from home.
Can you bring home ashes instead?
Yes, and it is simpler and considerably cheaper. If your loved one has been cremated abroad, or will be, the ashes travel with the cremation certificate and the death certificate, either as accompanied hand luggage or by a tracked, documented courier, depending on the airline and the country. We arrange the airline and the consular side either way.
