A national provider and a firm serving three areas offer the same thing, an unattended cremation with the ashes returned. What differs is the distance, the viewing, who you speak to and how the price is built.
The same product, delivered differently
A direct cremation is the same product wherever you buy it: an unattended cremation, no service, the ashes returned. The differences are in how it is delivered, and a national provider and a small firm deliver it differently. Neither way is wrong. It depends on what matters to your family, and the four things below are where the two usually part.
Distance
Ask where your loved one will be held, who does the collection, where the cremation will take place and how far that is from you. We keep them close: chapels of rest in London and Nottinghamshire, and the cremation at the City of London Crematorium or at Babworth, near Retford, with our own team doing the collection.
The viewing
Unattended does not have to mean not seeing your loved one again. Ask whether a viewing is possible before the day, where, and what it costs. Not every arrangement includes one, and the ones that do differ on where and when. We arrange a private viewing at the chapel of rest before the day, by appointment, for £150.
Who you speak to
Ask whether the person who takes your first call is the person who sees the cremation through, and whether you can reach them directly. Ask whether the case is handed on after the first call, and to whom. Ours is one coordinator throughout, reachable at any hour.
How the price is built
Ask what the headline figure includes and for the list of everything that could be added: an out-of-hours collection, a collection from a home, an urn, a viewing. Ours is £1,295, fixed, paid once, with two possible additions, the £150 viewing and a £250 urgent collection from a home, and neither appears unless you ask for it.

How we care for them
From the first call to the day the ashes are back with you. One coordinator stays with your family throughout, and you always know where your loved one is.
The first call
One phone call is enough. You tell us where your loved one is, and we agree the price and the next steps there and then.
Collection and care
We bring your loved one into our care, to rest in a private mortuary until the cremation. A viewing at our chapel of rest is £150.
The cremation
Unattended, at the City of London Crematorium or at Babworth, once every registration and permission is complete.
The ashes returned
We bring the ashes back to you, in an urn of your choosing. The whole process takes 7 to 10 days from your first call.
What a direct cremation costs, and what it covers
Everything listed here is inside the £1,295, so there is nothing to settle afterwards. It is paid before the cremation, and it does not change.

What the price does not cover
There is no service, no hearse and no mourners, and the family is not present at the crematorium. That is what makes it a direct cremation. Two things can add to the price: a private viewing at our chapel of rest, £150, and urgent collection from a home, £250. If a fee set by someone else applies in your case, we tell you about it before anything is agreed.
