What usually decides it
When two providers both score highly, what is left is where the cremation happens, whether you can see your loved one first, and what is inside the price.
When both scores are high
Two providers that both score well have both looked after families well. The decision now rests on things you can ask about directly, because the score cannot separate them. Ask each provider the same four questions and compare the answers rather than the stars.
Where
Ask which crematorium will be used, whether it is chosen by distance from the family or by where there is a slot, how far it is, and where your loved one is held in the meantime. Ours are a chapel of rest in London or Nottinghamshire, with the cremation at the City of London Crematorium or at Babworth.
The viewing
A viewing before an unattended cremation is a separate thing from the cremation itself, and not every arrangement includes one, so it is worth asking early. If that matters to you, ask before you agree to anything. Ours is a private viewing at the chapel of rest, by appointment, for £150, arranged around the family rather than the crematorium’s diary.
The price and its edges
Ask what is inside the figure and for the list of everything that could be added. The edges are where two similar prices differ: an urn, a collection from a home rather than a hospital, a collection outside office hours, a viewing. Ours is £1,295, paid once, with two possible additions, and neither appears unless you ask for it.
The timing
Ask how long the whole arrangement takes and when the ashes come back. A direct cremation is usually complete within seven to ten days of the first call, and the ashes are returned to you afterwards. Ask who brings them: a courier, a branch you collect from, or the person you have been speaking to. Ours are brought back to you by our own team.

How we care for them
From the first call to the day the ashes are back with you. One coordinator stays with your family throughout, and you always know where your loved one is.
The first call
One phone call is enough. You tell us where your loved one is, and we agree the price and the next steps there and then.
Collection and care
We bring your loved one into our care, to rest in a private mortuary until the cremation. A viewing at our chapel of rest is £150.
The cremation
Unattended, at the City of London Crematorium or at Babworth, once every registration and permission is complete.
The ashes returned
We bring the ashes back to you, in an urn of your choosing. The whole process takes 7 to 10 days from your first call.
What a direct cremation costs, and what it covers
Everything listed here is inside the £1,295, so there is nothing to settle afterwards. It is paid before the cremation, and it does not change.

What the price does not cover
There is no service, no hearse and no mourners, and the family is not present at the crematorium. That is what makes it a direct cremation. Two things can add to the price: a private viewing at our chapel of rest, £150, and urgent collection from a home, £250. If a fee set by someone else applies in your case, we tell you about it before anything is agreed.
