How much does a repatriation cost with Slaters International?

Slaters International publish one figure, £1,995, and they publish it as a starting price. It is the same starting price whichever country your loved one is in, which tells you where a bill might begin and nothing at all about where yours will end. What matters more than that number is what it buys, and how much of the work still lands back on you.
You will not need to fly out, or post anything abroad
Most families have no idea how many offices stand between them and getting someone home. A doctor has to certify the death. A local registrar has to record it. A mortuary has to prepare and release. A consulate has to authorise. An airline has to accept. Every one of them wants a particular document, in its own language, in its own order, and none of them will tell you what the next step is.
We deal with all of them, in the local language, and assemble the paperwork here. You will not be asked to fly out, sit in a foreign register office, order original certificates or post anything to another country. You stay where you are, and we tell you where things have got to.
Check the insurance before you pay for anything
Before you commit to any figure, ours or anybody else's, it is worth finding out whether it is already covered. A great many travel policies include repatriation, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do as well. Plenty do not, and the wording almost never makes it obvious either way.
We will go through the policy with you and handle the claim, so what you actually pay is whatever is left over. There is no charge for doing that, and it is the single thing families most often discover far too late.
One price, itemised, and nothing added afterwards
Our figure is all-inclusive and it arrives broken down: the preparation, the coffin, the flight, the documents, the consular fees and the coordination, each on its own line.
A starting price cannot do that. It describes the cheapest case somebody could imagine, not yours, and the distance between those two is exactly where families get caught out. We would rather cost your actual route and give you a real number, free, in about ten minutes.
We are not going to claim we are the cheapest, because until we know where your loved one is neither of us knows what this costs. What we will tell you is that the figure we quote is the figure you pay.
What we do while your loved one is in our care
We arrange the washing and the embalming, and restore a natural, peaceful appearance. Your loved one travels in a proper coffin, by road in a specialist vehicle or in the hold of a scheduled flight, handled throughout under the airline's own repatriation procedures.
A person does not travel on a passport. Transit documents are issued instead, and every country issues them differently. Getting one of them wrong is what leaves a repatriation stuck for a week, and preparing them is the part we do most often.
What happens once they are home
On arrival we meet the aircraft, oversee the transfer, and hand your loved one into the care of whichever funeral director you choose, anywhere in the country. If the funeral here is to be a cremation, the coroner has to give authority first, and we deal with that so the date does not slip.
There is no need to register the death a second time in the UK. It can be recorded with the General Register Office if you would like it recorded, and we will tell you whether that is worth doing in your case.
If a direct cremation suits you better, we arrange those ourselves for a fixed £1,295. That is the whole service rather than a starting point, and it stays with the same specialists from the first call to the day the ashes come back to you.

How much does it cost to repatriate a body to the UK?
It turns on where your loved one is, what the flight costs and what the local authorities require, so a single figure quoted before anyone has asked you those things is a guess. Slaters publish £1,995 as a starting point. We would rather cost your actual route and send you a free itemised figure, usually inside about ten minutes, covering the coffin, the preparation, the documents, the consular fees and the transport.
How long does it take to bring someone home?
Usually 2 to 7 days. What sets the pace is the paperwork at the far end rather than the flight itself, and some countries are slower to release documents than others. We will tell you what your own case realistically looks like on the first call, rather than leaving you to guess at it from a website.
Does travel insurance cover repatriation to the UK?
Often, though not always, and the wording is rarely obvious. Many travel policies include repatriation cover, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do too. We will read the policy with you and deal with the claim, so you only pay for whatever is not already covered. What documents are needed to repatriate someone?
Usually the local death certificate, a certificate of embalming, a certificate showing there is no contagious disease, and authorisation from the consulate or the authorities in the country where the death happened. A person does not travel on a passport, so transit documents are issued instead. We prepare and coordinate all of it as part of the price.
Who do I call first when someone dies abroad?
Ring us, at any hour. You do not need paperwork, a reference number or a decision ready. Where your loved one is and where they need to be is enough for us to start, and if there is anything urgent to be done in the next few hours we will tell you what it is on that first call.
