How much does a repatriation cost with National Repatriation?
Have a read before you pick up the phone.
National Repatriation do not publish their fees. Their website asks you to contact them for more information and for their fees, and the card types they accept are published where the prices are not.
That leaves the telephone as the only way to find out. In the week somebody has died, ringing a stranger to ask what it will cost is a hard call to make, and harder still to make twice in order to compare.
A figure without having to ask for it
Tell us where your loved one is and where they need to be, and we send back an itemised price for your own case. It is free, it takes about ten minutes, at any hour, and nothing is signed at the end of it.
The figure is all-inclusive and it is broken down: the preparation, the coffin, the flight, the documents, the consular fees and the coordination. You can read it at three in the morning, send it to a brother in another country, and look at it again the next day when you are able to think.
We will not tell you we are the cheapest, because until we know the route neither of us knows what this costs. We will tell you that the figure we quote is the figure you pay.
You will not need to fly out, or post anything abroad
Between a death abroad and a flight home sits a chain of offices: a doctor, a local registrar, a mortuary, a consulate, an airline. Every one of them wants its own document, in its own language, in its own order.
We deal with all of them, in the local language, and assemble the paperwork here. You will not be asked to travel, to sit in a foreign register office, or to post original certificates to another country.
Check the insurance before you pay for anything
Before you plan around any figure at all, it is worth knowing whether it is already covered. Many travel policies include repatriation, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do too, although plenty do not and the wording rarely says so plainly.
We will read the policy with you and handle the claim, so you only pay for whatever the insurer does not. There is no charge for that. It is simply the first thing worth checking, and the thing families most often find out about too late.
What we do while your loved one is in our care
We arrange the washing and the embalming, and restore a natural, peaceful appearance, so your loved one arrives looking like themselves.
The coffin has to meet both the airline's requirements and the receiving country's. The travel documents are issued where the death happened rather than carried in a passport, and every country issues them its own way. Where a route runs partly by road, as several do, the papers have to satisfy each border it crosses.
What happens once they are home
We meet the aircraft and oversee the transfer, then hand your loved one into the care of a funeral director of your choosing, wherever in the country you are. If the funeral is a cremation, the coroner authorises it first and we deal with that step.
You will not have to register the death a second time in the UK. It can be recorded with the General Register Office if you would like it recorded, and we will tell you whether that applies to you.
Should a direct cremation be the better answer for your family, we arrange those ourselves for a fixed £1,295. The figure is fixed and published, so there is nothing to ask for and nothing to negotiate.

How much does it cost to repatriate a body to the UK?
It depends on the country, the flight and what the local authorities require, so a single number given before anyone has asked is a guess. National Repatriation ask you to contact them for their fees. We will cost your actual route and send a free itemised figure, usually inside about ten minutes, covering the coffin, the preparation, the documents, the consular fees and the transport.
How long does it take to bring someone home?
Usually 2 to 7 days. The flight is rarely the delay. What sets the pace is how quickly the authorities where the death happened will issue and release the documents. We will give you a realistic picture of your own case on the first call.
Does travel insurance cover repatriation to the UK?
Often, though not always, and the wording is rarely obvious. Many travel policies include repatriation cover, and some life insurance policies and funeral plans do too. We will read the policy with you and deal with the claim, so you only pay for whatever is not already covered.
Who do I call first when someone dies abroad?
Ring us, at any hour. You do not need paperwork, a reference number or a decision ready. Where your loved one is and where they need to be is enough for us to start, and if anything is urgent we will tell you what it is on that first call.

What if a coroner is involved?
It is common and it is not a problem, but it does affect timing. Where a death is referred to a coroner, or where a post-mortem is required before release, the documents cannot be issued until that is complete. We deal with the coroner's office directly and tell you what it means for the date rather than letting it come as a surprise.
