Repatriation from Turkey to the United Kingdom

Turkey is a familiar route. British residents are settled around Fethiye, Bodrum and the wider south-west coast, and many more people visit each year. When a death happens in Turkey, bringing your loved one home to the UK draws together the Turkish authorities, the receiving arrangements in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the transport itself. We coordinate all three, so the family does not have to travel to Turkey or deal directly with local offices in a language they may not speak. If you are at the very start of this, our repatriation hub explains the process in plain terms.

Turkey is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so where a Turkish public document has to be recognised by a UK authority it can be issued with an apostille rather than passing through a longer legalisation chain. The registry can also provide a multilingual international death certificate — the Formül C — which the receiving funeral director and registrar in the UK can generally read without a separate translation.

The process in Turkey

A death is registered with the Population / Civil Registry Directorate (Nüfus Müdürlüğü), which issues the death certificate — the multilingual Formül C international certificate or the domestic Ölüm Belgesi. The local funeral director handles the practical steps on the ground and obtains permission to transfer the body to the UK. We obtain the death certificate and the transfer permission on the family's behalf while the deceased is prepared.

Preparation and transport

The deceased is embalmed and placed in a sealed, transport-standard coffin suitable for carriage by air, accompanied by an embalming certificate and a freedom-from-infection certificate for transport. Turkey is reached by air freight, with regular flights to UK airports. Our team collects the deceased from the local funeral home or hospital and manages the journey through to the receiving funeral director in the UK.

Bringing your loved one into the UK

Once in the UK, the family can arrange the funeral. For a burial, the foreign death certificate is generally sufficient. For a cremation in England and Wales, the coroner must give authority first — this is the Cremation Form 6, issued once the coroner is satisfied that no further investigation is needed (in Scotland this role falls to the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. We liaise with the coroner's office so the authority is in place without delay.

Timelines and what affects them

A repatriation from Turkey typically takes 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK, the deceased travelling by air over a distance of roughly 2,500 km. The timing depends on how quickly the registry issues the death certificate, the transfer permission and the preparation of the deceased, and on flight availability from the nearest Turkish airport. Where a death is sudden or unexplained and the authorities require an examination before release, the timeline can be longer.

This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.

Costs and financial support

We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through the journey home, the arrival in the UK and the final funeral paperwork. The figure depends on the region and departure airport in Turkey, the cause of death, and local funeral-director fees. Families are often unaware that a UK-based estate or an insurance policy, or travel insurance held by the deceased, may cover part of the cost — we are glad to talk this through openly.

Why families choose Funero UK

We handle the whole administrative and logistical process, keep the family informed at every stage, and are contactable 24/7. Our aim is that the distance between Turkey and home should never translate into lost days or added distress at the worst possible time.

Authorities & documents

Everyone involved in a repatriation to the United Kingdom, and the paperwork we prepare on your behalf.

Authorities involved

The offices and officials we coordinate with in both countries — tap to view the full list.

  • Population / Civil Registry Directorate (Nüfus Müdürlüğü): registers the death and issues the death certificate, including the multilingual Formül C international certificate.
  • Local funeral director in Turkey: handles the practical steps on the ground, carries out the embalming and preparation, and obtains permission to transfer the body to the UK.
  • Receiving funeral director in the UK: takes the deceased into care on arrival and carries out the funeral.
  • UK coroner (or procurator fiscal in Scotland): where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, authorises it via Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner).

Documents required

The certificates and permits we prepare on your behalf — tap to view the full list.

  • Turkish death certificate — the multilingual Formül C international certificate or the domestic Ölüm Belgesi, from the Population / Civil Registry Directorate.
  • Funeral director's permission to transfer the body abroad — authorising the deceased to leave Turkey.
  • Embalming certificate — confirming preparation to international transport standard.
  • Freedom from infection certificate — confirming no public-health risk in transit.
  • Coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) — only where a cremation is planned in England and Wales.

Repatriation to the UK

Common questions about bringing someone who has died abroad home to the UK — the paperwork, timescales, costs, and who arranges each step.

What documents are needed to bring someone home from Turkey?

The core documents are the Turkish death certificate — usually the multilingual Formül C international certificate, or the domestic Ölüm Belgesi — the local funeral director's permission to transfer the body abroad, and embalming and freedom-from-infection certificates for transport.

Where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, the coroner must also authorise it (Cremation Form 6). We obtain all of the Turkish documents on your behalf.

How long does repatriation from Turkey to the UK take?

Typically 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK, the deceased travelling by air over a distance of roughly 2,500 km. As Turkey is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention and issues the multilingual Formül C, the paperwork is predictable.

The timing depends on how quickly the registry issues the death certificate and transfer permission, the preparation of the deceased, and flight availability. Where a death is sudden or unexplained and an examination is required before release, the timeline can be longer.

Does the family need to travel to Turkey?

No. We coordinate directly with the local funeral director, the Population / Civil Registry Directorate (Nüfus Müdürlüğü) and the airline, so the family does not need to travel or deal with Turkish offices.

The process is arranged remotely on the basis of a simple written authorisation sent by email or WhatsApp.

Do Turkish documents need to be legalised for the UK?

Turkey is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so where a Turkish public document has to be recognised by a UK authority it can be apostilled rather than passing through a longer legalisation chain.

In practice the multilingual Formül C international certificate is generally read without a separate translation, and we arrange any legalisation that is needed as part of the process.

What does the price include, and when is payment due?

The quoted price covers the Turkish documentation and transfer permission, embalming, a sealed transport coffin suitable for the UK funeral, the transport certificates, air freight to the UK and handover to your funeral director.

We confirm a firm quote at first contact with no hidden costs. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs, and we then stay with you through arrival and the final paperwork. The figure depends on the region and departure airport in Turkey and local fees.

Impeccable service at a difficult time

I can't speak highly enough of Sebastian and the Funero team. I'll admit I was slightly worried about using them as they were far more competitive — but their service was impeccable, with regular, timely communication that was a huge comfort at a difficult time.

Calm, empathetic and endlessly patient

Considering the shock and our lack of knowledge, Sebastian and Mihai were absolutely amazing with their help and guidance. It was an emotionally draining time, but they are calm, polite, empathetic and warm — from practical advice to personal effort and so much patience. We can't thank them enough.

They brought our loved one home from Egypt

Our loved one died on holiday in Egypt and, as a family of modest means, what felt impossible was made possible. Funero was the only company that didn't ask for money upfront, which gave us time to fundraise — and their quote was more than reasonable. They kept us informed every step, translated everything, and their reps in Egypt worked so hard for us. We can't thank them enough for bringing our loved one home.
