Repatriation from Tunisia to the United Kingdom

Tunisia has long-standing ties with the UK, with British holidaymakers, retirees and a settled Tunisian community moving between the two countries throughout the year. When a death occurs in Tunisia, bringing your loved one home brings together the Tunisian authorities, the receiving arrangements in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, and the flight itself. We coordinate all three, so the family does not have to travel to Tunisia or deal directly with local offices in a language they may not speak. If you are at the very start of this, our repatriation hub explains the process in plain terms.

Tunisia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so its documents can be apostilled for use in the UK rather than passing through a longer legalisation chain, which helps keep the timeline predictable. Where a document is not already in English, a certified translation is prepared so that UK registrars, coroners and funeral directors can read it.

The process in Tunisia

A doctor first certifies the death. It is then registered at the local Municipalité (commune), whose civil registry records it and issues the Tunisian death certificate (acte de décès). Before the deceased can be moved for transport, the police issue permission to remove the body. We obtain these on the family's behalf while a local funeral director prepares the deceased for the journey.

Preparation and transport

The deceased is embalmed and placed in a sealed, transport-standard coffin, accompanied by an embalming certificate and a freedom-from-infection certificate confirming there is no public-health risk in transit. Because Tunisia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the acte de décès and supporting papers are apostilled for use in the UK, with a certified English translation where needed. The journey home is made by air to a UK airport, a relatively short distance of roughly 1,830 km, and our team manages the airline logistics through to the receiving funeral director.

Bringing your loved one into the UK

Once in the UK, the family can arrange the funeral. For a burial, the Tunisian death certificate is generally sufficient. For a cremation, the coroner in England and Wales must give authority first — this is the Cremation Form 6, issued once the coroner is satisfied there is no need for further investigation (in Scotland this role falls to the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. We liaise with the coroner's office so this is in place without delay.

Timelines and what affects them

A repatriation from Tunisia typically takes 5–7 days from first contact. The short distance of roughly 1,830 km means timing is driven mainly by the paperwork — registration at the Municipalité, police permission to remove the body, embalming, and the apostille and any translation. Where a death is sudden or unexplained and a local investigation is opened, release can take longer, and that part is largely outside anyone's control.

This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.

Costs and financial support

We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death. The final figure depends on the city of departure, airline routing and local fees. Families are often unaware that a UK-based estate, a life-insurance policy or the deceased's own travel insurance may cover part of the cost — we are glad to talk this through openly.

Why families choose Funero UK

We manage the Tunisian formalities, the apostille and translation, the airline logistics and the UK reception as one coordinated process, keeping the family informed at every stage and remaining contactable 24/7.

Authorities & documents

Authorities involved

The offices and officials we coordinate with in both countries — tap to view the full list.

  • Attending or treating doctor: certifies the death, on which local registration is based.
  • Municipalité (commune) — civil registry: registers the death and issues the Tunisian death certificate (acte de décès).
  • Police: issue permission to remove the body for transport.
  • Local funeral director in Tunisia: carries out embalming and preparation to international transport standard.
  • UK coroner / procurator fiscal: where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, authorises it via Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner).
  • Receiving funeral director in the UK: takes the deceased into care for the funeral.

Documents required

The certificates and permits we prepare on your behalf — tap to view the full list.

  • Tunisian death certificate (acte de décès) — registered locally at the Municipalité.
  • Police permission to remove the body — authorising the deceased to be moved for transport.
  • Apostille — legalising the death certificate and supporting papers for use in the UK.
  • Certified English translation — where documents are not already in English.
  • Embalming certificate — confirming preparation to international transport standard.
  • Freedom-from-infection certificate — confirming no public-health risk in transit.
  • Coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) — only where a cremation is planned in England and Wales.

Repatriation to the UK

Common questions about bringing someone who has died abroad home to the UK — the paperwork, timescales, costs, and who arranges each step.

What documents are needed to bring someone home from Tunisia?

The deceased travels with the Tunisian death certificate (acte de décès) from the Municipalité, police permission to remove the body, and embalming and freedom-from-infection certificates for transport. As Tunisia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, the documents are apostilled for use in the UK, with a certified English translation where needed.

We obtain and prepare all of this on your behalf, so the family does not have to deal with Tunisian offices directly.

Do Tunisian documents need to be legalised for the UK?

Yes. Tunisia is a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so the death certificate and supporting papers are legalised with an apostille, which the UK accepts without any further consular step.

Where a document is not already in English, a certified translation is prepared. We arrange both.

How long does repatriation from Tunisia to the UK take?

Typically 5–7 days from first contact. The short distance — roughly 1,830 km — means the timing is driven mainly by the paperwork: registration at the Municipalité, police permission, embalming, and the apostille and any translation.

Where a death is sudden or unexplained and a local investigation is opened, release can take longer, and that part is largely outside anyone's control.

Does the family need to travel to Tunisia?

No. We coordinate directly with the Municipalité, the police, our local funeral agents and the airline, so the family does not need to travel or make calls to Tunisian offices.

The process is arranged remotely on the basis of a simple written authorisation.

What does the price include, and when is payment due?

The quoted price covers the Tunisian documentation, the apostille and translation, embalming, a transport coffin suitable for the UK funeral, and the flight home with handover to your funeral director. We confirm a firm quote at first contact, with no hidden costs.

The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death.

Impeccable service at a difficult time

I can't speak highly enough of Sebastian and the Funero team. I'll admit I was slightly worried about using them as they were far more competitive — but their service was impeccable, with regular, timely communication that was a huge comfort at a difficult time.

They brought our loved one home from Egypt

Our loved one died on holiday in Egypt and, as a family of modest means, what felt impossible was made possible. Funero was the only company that didn't ask for money upfront, which gave us time to fundraise — and their quote was more than reasonable. They kept us informed every step, translated everything, and their reps in Egypt worked so hard for us. We can't thank them enough for bringing our loved one home.
