Repatriation from Sri Lanka to the United Kingdom

Bringing a loved one home from Sri Lanka is a long-haul journey, in distance and in paperwork, but it is a well-trodden path for the many Sri Lankan Tamil and Sinhala families settled across the UK. It brings together the death registration in Sri Lanka, the certificates required for international air transport, the legalisation of the documents for use here, and the receiving arrangements at home. We coordinate all of this across the time difference, so the family does not have to deal with Sri Lankan registrars, doctors or airlines directly. If you are at the very start of this, our repatriation hub explains the process in plain terms.

Sri Lanka is not part of the European Union, so the multilingual EU death certificate does not apply. The death is registered locally, and the documents are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Sri Lanka High Commission — with a certified English translation where they are issued in Sinhala or Tamil — before they are used in the UK. We are mindful, too, that many families wish to hold the funeral without delay for religious reasons, and we work to move as quickly as the formalities allow.

The process in Sri Lanka

A death in Sri Lanka is registered with the Registrar of Births and Deaths, who issues the death certificate once a notice of death has been given by the Judicial Medical Officer or the attending doctor. Where the death was natural and expected this is usually straightforward; where it was sudden or unexplained, the medical examination has to be completed before the deceased can be released. A local undertaker then prepares the deceased and arranges the transfer for the journey.

The deceased travels with the Sri Lankan death certificate — with a certified English translation where it is issued in Sinhala or Tamil — a doctor's death certificate and a certificate of embalming, together with a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains to the UK and the deceased's passport. These documents are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Sri Lanka High Commission so they are recognised here. Where the death was sudden or unexplained, HM Coroner in the UK may also be notified.

Preparation and transport

The deceased is embalmed and placed in a sealed, transport-standard coffin suitable for international air freight and for the funeral in the UK. Because Sri Lanka lies some 8,700 km away, the journey is made by air to a UK airport, with the certificates travelling with the coffin. Our team works with the local undertaker to collect the deceased, complete the preparation and manage the flight through to the receiving funeral director in the UK.

Bringing your loved one into the UK

Once your loved one is home, the family can arrange the funeral. For a burial, the Sri Lankan death certificate is generally sufficient. For a cremation in England and Wales, the coroner must give authority first — this is the Cremation Form 6, issued once the coroner is satisfied there is no need for further investigation (in Scotland this role falls to the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. We liaise with the coroner's office so this authority is in place when the deceased arrives, which matters where a prompt funeral is expected on religious grounds.

Timelines and what affects them

A repatriation from Sri Lanka typically takes 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK. The timing depends on how quickly the death is registered and the certificate issued, whether a Judicial Medical Officer's examination is required, the legalisation and any certified translation of the paperwork, and the availability of a suitable long-haul flight. Where the death was sudden or unexplained, release can take longer.

This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.

Costs and financial support

We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The final figure depends on the region of departure in Sri Lanka, the airport routing, and local undertaker and legalisation fees. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death. Families are often unaware that a UK-based estate, a life-insurance policy or travel insurance held by the deceased may cover part of the cost — we are glad to talk this through openly.

Why families choose Funero UK

We manage the Sri Lankan formalities, the legalisation and translation, the airline logistics and the UK reception as one coordinated process, mindful of the family's faith and wishes, keeping you informed at every stage and remaining contactable 24/7.

Authorities & documents

Everyone involved in a repatriation to the United Kingdom, and the paperwork we prepare on your behalf.

Authorities involved

The offices and officials we coordinate with in both countries — tap to view the full list.

  • Registrar of Births and Deaths: registers the death and issues the Sri Lankan death certificate, once a notice of death is given by the Judicial Medical Officer or the attending doctor.
  • Judicial Medical Officer or attending doctor: certifies the medical cause of death and, in a sudden or unexplained death, completes the examination before release.
  • Local undertaker: prepares the deceased, carries out embalming and arranges the transfer for transport.
  • Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Sri Lanka High Commission: legalise the documents so they are recognised in the UK.
  • HM Coroner in the UK: may be notified where the death was sudden or unexplained, and authorises any cremation in England and Wales via Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal).

Documents required

The certificates and permits we prepare on your behalf — tap to view the full list.

  • Sri Lankan death certificate — with a certified English translation where issued in Sinhala or Tamil.
  • Doctor's death certificate and certificate of embalming — confirming the cause of death and preparation to international transport standard.
  • Certificate of permission to transfer the remains to the UK — issued with the deceased's passport.
  • Legalisation through the FCDO and the Sri Lanka High Commission — so the documents are recognised in the UK.
  • Coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) — only where a cremation is planned in England and Wales.

Repatriation to the UK

Common questions about bringing someone who has died abroad home to the UK — the paperwork, timescales, costs, and who arranges each step.

What documents are needed to bring someone home from Sri Lanka?

The core documents are the Sri Lankan death certificate (with a certified English translation where it is in Sinhala or Tamil), a doctor's death certificate and certificate of embalming, and a certificate giving permission to transfer the remains to the UK with the deceased's passport.

These are legalised through the FCDO and the Sri Lanka High Commission so they are recognised here. Where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, the coroner also authorises it (Cremation Form 6). We obtain everything on your behalf.

How long does repatriation from Sri Lanka to the UK take?

Typically 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK. The timing depends on how quickly the death is registered, whether a Judicial Medical Officer's examination is required, the legalisation and any certified translation, and the availability of a suitable long-haul flight.

Where the death was sudden or unexplained, release can take longer.

Do the Sri Lankan documents need to be legalised or translated?

Yes. Because Sri Lanka's documents are not accepted here in their original form, they are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Sri Lanka High Commission before they can be used in the UK.

Where a certificate is issued in Sinhala or Tamil, a certified English translation is arranged. We manage the legalisation and translation so the paperwork is in order before the deceased travels.

Can we hold the funeral quickly, in keeping with our faith?

Many Sri Lankan Tamil and Sinhala families in the UK wish to hold the funeral soon after their loved one arrives, whether by Hindu, Buddhist, Muslim or Christian rite. A burial can generally proceed on the Sri Lankan death certificate; for a cremation in England and Wales, we arrange the coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) in advance.

We work to move each stage as quickly as the international formalities allow, so the funeral can follow with as little delay as possible after arrival.

What does the price include, and when is payment due?

The quoted price covers the Sri Lankan documentation and legalisation, embalming, a transport coffin suitable for the UK funeral, air transport and handover to your funeral director, with no hidden costs.

The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death.

I can't speak highly enough of Sebastian and the Funero team. I'll admit I was slightly worried about using them as they were far more competitive — but their service was impeccable, with regular, timely communication that was a huge comfort at a difficult time.

They brought our loved one home from Egypt

Our loved one died on holiday in Egypt and, as a family of modest means, what felt impossible was made possible. Funero was the only company that didn't ask for money upfront, which gave us time to fundraise — and their quote was more than reasonable. They kept us informed every step, translated everything, and their reps in Egypt worked so hard for us. We can't thank them enough for bringing our loved one home.
