Repatriation from Sierra Leone to the United Kingdom
Bringing a loved one home from Sierra Leone is a well-established but document-heavy journey. It brings together the registration of the death in Sierra Leone, the clearances needed for international air transport, and the receiving arrangements in the UK. We coordinate the whole process, so the family does not have to travel to Freetown or deal with local offices, the British High Commission or the airline directly. If you are at the very start of this, our repatriation hub explains the process in plain terms.
Documents are issued in English, so no translation is usually needed for the UK. Sierra Leone is not a member of the Hague Apostille Convention, so where a document must be formally authenticated it is legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Sierra Leone High Commission rather than by apostille. In most repatriation cases the death certificate is accepted as issued, and we advise on any document that needs legalisation for a specific purpose such as probate.
The process in Sierra Leone
A doctor first issues a Medical Certificate of Cause of Death, and the local registry office then registers the death and issues the death certificate. The coroner issues permission to remove the body, and the British High Commission issues a Letter of No Objection confirming there is no barrier to repatriation. The documents that accompany the deceased are the Sierra Leonean death certificate, the coroner's permission to remove the body, and the British High Commission Letter of No Objection, together with the deceased's passport. We obtain and check these on the family's behalf.
Preparation and transport
The deceased is embalmed to international transport standard by a licensed local funeral home and placed in a sealed, transport-standard coffin. From Freetown the journey is made by air, usually connecting through a regional hub to a UK airport. Our team collects the deceased, arranges the airline documentation, and manages the connecting journey through to the receiving funeral director in the UK.
Bringing your loved one into the UK
Once in the UK, the family can arrange the funeral. For a burial, the Sierra Leonean death certificate is generally sufficient. For a cremation, the coroner in England and Wales must give authority first — this is the Cremation Form 6, issued once the coroner is satisfied there is no need for further investigation (in Scotland this role falls to the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. We liaise with the coroner's office so this is in place without delay.
Timelines and what affects them
A repatriation from Sierra Leone typically takes 5–7 days from first contact, over a distance of roughly 4,930 km. The timeline is driven mainly by the fact that direct air links between Freetown and the UK are limited and space for repatriation is not always immediate, alongside the local registration, the coroner's permission and the Letter of No Objection. Where the police are involved after a sudden death, release can take longer.
This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.
Costs and financial support
We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The final figure depends on the local funeral-home fees, the clearances and the flight routing out of Freetown. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death. A UK estate, travel insurance or a life-insurance policy may cover part of the cost, and we are glad to discuss this openly.
