Repatriation from Nepal to the United Kingdom

Bringing a loved one home from Nepal is a long-haul repatriation that takes careful coordination, but it is a well-trodden path — not least for the Nepali and Gurkha community long settled in the UK. It brings together the death registration in Nepal, the legalisation and translation of the documents for use here, the certificates required for international air transport, and the receiving arrangements at home. We coordinate the whole process across the time difference, so the family does not have to deal with Nepali offices, hospitals or airlines directly. If you are at the very start of this, our repatriation hub explains the process in plain terms.

Nepal is not part of the European Union, so the multilingual EU death certificate does not apply. Nepali documents are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Nepali embassy — with a certified English translation — before they can be used in the UK. Where the family's tradition calls for a prompt Hindu or Buddhist cremation in Nepal, a local cremation and the return of the ashes is simpler and quicker than repatriating the body, and we will talk both options through with you sensitively.

The process in Nepal

The death is registered with the local Nepalese authorities, who issue the death certificate. Registration is supported by the deceased's passport and a report on the cause of death. Where a death is sudden, unattended or unnatural, the teaching or district hospital completes any autopsy before the deceased can be released, which adds time. The British Embassy in Kathmandu supports the death registration and can provide documentation for the return to the UK.

The deceased travels with the Nepalese death certificate (with a certified English translation), a doctor's or hospital report detailing the cause of death, and the deceased's passport together with the British Embassy death-registration documentation. These papers are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Nepali embassy so they are recognised here. A local funeral agent carries out embalming and prepares the transport casket for the flight.

Preparation and transport

The deceased is embalmed and placed in a sealed, transport-standard casket suitable for international air freight and for the funeral in the UK. Because Nepal lies some 7,300 km away and has no direct flights to the UK, the journey routes through a hub, with the certificates travelling with the casket. Our team works with the local funeral agent to collect the deceased, complete the preparation and manage the flight through to the receiving funeral director in the UK.

Bringing your loved one into the UK

On arrival in the UK, the family can arrange the funeral. For a burial, the Nepalese death certificate is generally sufficient once legalised and translated. For a cremation in England and Wales, the coroner must give authority first — this is the Cremation Form 6, issued once the coroner is satisfied there is no need for further investigation (in Scotland this role falls to the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. We liaise with the coroner's office so this authority is in place when the deceased arrives.

Timelines and what affects them

A repatriation from Nepal typically takes 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK. The timing depends on how quickly the death is registered and the certificate issued, whether an autopsy is required, the legalisation and certified translation of the paperwork, and the availability of a suitable flight from Nepal, which routes to the UK via a hub. Where a hospital examination is needed, release can take longer.

This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.

Costs and financial support

We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The final figure depends on where in Nepal the death occurred and the journey out, the flight routing to the UK, and legalisation, translation and local funeral-agent fees; returning ashes rather than the body costs considerably less. The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death. A UK estate, travel insurance or a life-insurance policy may cover part of the cost — we are glad to talk this through openly.

Authorities & documents

Authorities involved

The offices and officials we coordinate with in both countries — tap to view the full list.

  • Local Nepalese authorities: register the death and issue the Nepalese death certificate.
  • Teaching or district hospital: confirms the cause of death and completes any autopsy before the deceased can be released.
  • British Embassy, Kathmandu: supports the death registration and provides documentation for the return to the UK.
  • Local funeral agent: carries out embalming and prepares the transport casket under our coordination.
  • Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Nepali embassy: legalise the documents so they are recognised in the UK.
  • UK coroner / procurator fiscal: where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, authorises it via Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal).

Documents required

The certificates and permits we prepare on your behalf — tap to view the full list.

  • Nepalese death certificate — with a certified English translation.
  • Doctor's or hospital report — detailing the cause of death.
  • Deceased's passport and British Embassy death-registration documentation — supporting the return to the UK.
  • Embalming certificate — confirming preparation to international transport standard.
  • Legalisation through the FCDO and the Nepali embassy — so the documents are recognised in the UK.
  • Coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) — only where a cremation is planned in England and Wales.

Repatriation to the UK

Common questions about bringing someone who has died abroad home to the UK — the paperwork, timescales, costs, and who arranges each step.

What documents are needed to bring someone home from Nepal?

The deceased travels with the Nepalese death certificate (with a certified English translation), a doctor's or hospital report on the cause of death, and the deceased's passport together with the British Embassy death-registration documentation, alongside an embalming certificate.

These papers are legalised through the FCDO and the Nepali embassy so they are recognised here. Where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, the coroner also authorises it (Cremation Form 6). We obtain and legalise everything on your behalf.

How long does repatriation from Nepal to the UK take?

Typically 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK. The timing depends on how quickly the death is registered, whether an autopsy is required, the legalisation and certified translation, and the availability of a suitable flight from Nepal, which routes via a hub.

Where a hospital examination is needed, release can take longer.

Can we return ashes from Nepal instead of the body?

Yes. Where the family's tradition calls for a prompt Hindu or Buddhist cremation in Nepal, we can arrange a local cremation and the return of the ashes to the UK. This avoids embalming and casket transport, so it is simpler, quicker and considerably less costly than repatriating the body.

We will talk both options through sensitively and follow your wishes.

Do the Nepalese documents need to be legalised or translated?

Yes. Because Nepal's documents are not accepted here in their original form, they are legalised through the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office and the Nepali embassy before they can be used in the UK, and are accompanied by a certified English translation.

We manage the legalisation and translation so the paperwork is in order before the deceased travels. This route is a familiar one for the Nepali and Gurkha community settled in the UK.

What does the price include, and when is payment due?

The quoted price covers the Nepalese documentation and legalisation, embalming, a transport casket suitable for the UK funeral, air transport and handover to your funeral director, with no hidden costs. Returning ashes rather than the body costs considerably less.

The agreed price is settled once the flight is confirmed, with no deposit or advance required, before your loved one departs; we then stay with you through arrival, the final paperwork and registering the death.

Impeccable service at a difficult time

I can't speak highly enough of Sebastian and the Funero team. I'll admit I was slightly worried about using them as they were far more competitive — but their service was impeccable, with regular, timely communication that was a huge comfort at a difficult time.

They brought our loved one home from Egypt

Our loved one died on holiday in Egypt and, as a family of modest means, what felt impossible was made possible. Funero was the only company that didn't ask for money upfront, which gave us time to fundraise — and their quote was more than reasonable. They kept us informed every step, translated everything, and their reps in Egypt worked so hard for us. We can't thank them enough for bringing our loved one home.
