Repatriation from Azerbaijan to the United Kingdom

Bringing a loved one home from Azerbaijan is a long-haul repatriation rather than a short European transfer, but the process is well established. It brings together the death-registration formalities in Azerbaijan, the legalisation of the death certificate for use in the UK, the documentation prepared for the flight, and the receiving arrangements in the UK. We coordinate the whole process from here, so the family does not have to deal with the registration office in Baku, the funeral director or the airline directly. If you are just starting, our repatriation hub sets out the essentials.

Azerbaijan lies roughly 3,900 km from the UK, so the deceased travels by air freight, usually from Baku. Azerbaijan is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the Azerbaijani death certificate can be legalised for the UK with an apostille rather than a longer legalisation chain. Because it is issued in Azerbaijani, a certified English translation is normally arranged alongside it.

The process in Azerbaijan

The death is first certified medically, and a medical death certificate (Form AZS-106) is issued stating the cause of death. The death is then registered at the district (city) Registration Department, or through an ASAN Service centre, which issues the civil death certificate (ölüm haqqında şəhadətnamə) in Azerbaijani. The certificate is legalised with an apostille and given a certified English translation for use in the UK. Where a death is sudden or its cause is unclear, a post-mortem or further enquiries may be required before the deceased can be released.

Preparation and transport

An international funeral director in Azerbaijan prepares the deceased for the flight — embalming, a sealed transport-standard coffin, and the certificates of embalming and freedom from infection that airlines require — and assembles the transport documentation for the flight. The deceased then travels as documented air cargo, usually from Baku to a UK airport. We arrange the airline booking and the cargo formalities and confirm that every document is complete and correctly legalised before the flight is booked, to avoid problems at the terminal.

Bringing your loved one into the UK

On arrival in the UK, the family can arrange the funeral. A burial can generally proceed on the apostilled and translated Azerbaijani death certificate. For a cremation in England and Wales, the coroner must first give authority using the Cremation Form 6, once satisfied that no further investigation is needed (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner). You can read more about the coroner's role in England in our resource centre. Azerbaijan is a predominantly Muslim country, and many families wish to observe an Islamic funeral with a prompt burial; a repatriation over this distance cannot be same-day, but we work as quickly as the formalities allow and can coordinate with a mosque or Muslim funeral director for a burial soon after arrival.

Timelines and what affects them

A repatriation from Azerbaijan typically takes 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK, over a distance of roughly 3,900 km. The timing depends on how quickly the medical and civil death certificates are issued, the apostille and certified translation, the preparation of the deceased, and the availability of a suitable flight from Baku, which may involve a connection. Where the cause of death requires further enquiries, release can take longer, and long-haul logistics can extend the timing.

This estimate is counted from when the death is registered, and our team does everything possible to complete the repatriation sooner.

Costs and financial support

We quote a firm price for the services included at first contact, with no hidden costs. The final figure depends on the region of departure, the flight routing from Baku, and local funeral-director and administrative fees. Families are often unaware that a UK-based estate, a life-insurance policy, or travel insurance held by the deceased may cover part of the cost — we are happy to talk this through openly.

Why families choose Funero UK

We handle the Azerbaijani formalities, the apostille and translation, the airline logistics and the UK reception as one coordinated process, keeping the family informed at every stage and remaining contactable 24/7. Our aim is that the distance between Azerbaijan and home should never translate into lost days or added distress at the worst possible time.

  • Attending doctor / medical examiner: certifies the death and issues the medical death certificate (Form AZS-106) stating the cause of death.
  • District (city) Registration Department / ASAN Service: registers the death and issues the civil death certificate (ölüm haqqında şəhadətnamə), which is then legalised with an apostille.
  • International funeral director in Azerbaijan: carries out embalming and preparation for carriage and assembles the transport documentation for the flight.
  • Airline: carries the deceased as documented cargo under international regulations, usually from Baku.
  • UK coroner / procurator fiscal: where a cremation is planned in England and Wales, authorises it via Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal; in Northern Ireland, the coroner).

Documents required

The certificates and permits we prepare on your behalf — tap to view the full list.

  • Azerbaijani death certificate (ölüm haqqında şəhadətnamə) — issued by the district Registration Department or ASAN Service, in Azerbaijani.
  • Medical death certificate (Form AZS-106) — stating the cause of death.
  • Apostille — legalising the death certificate for use in the UK under the Hague Convention.
  • Certified English translation — of the death certificate and related documents.
  • Embalming and freedom-from-infection certificates — for international carriage.
  • Transport documentation assembled for the flight — prepared by the international funeral director.
  • Coroner's authority (Cremation Form 6) — only where a cremation is planned in England and Wales.

Repatriation to the UK

Common questions about bringing someone who has died abroad home to the UK — the paperwork, timescales, costs, and who arranges each step.

What documents are needed to bring someone home from Azerbaijan?

The deceased travels with the Azerbaijani death certificate carrying an apostille, a certified English translation, the medical death certificate (Form AZS-106), and certificates of embalming and freedom from infection, together with the transport documentation the funeral director assembles for the flight.

Because the documents are issued in Azerbaijani, they must be legalised with an apostille and translated before use here. We arrange all of this on your behalf.

How long does repatriation from Azerbaijan to the UK take?

Typically 5–7 days from first contact to arrival in the UK, over a distance of roughly 3,900 km by air.

The timing depends on how quickly the medical and civil death certificates are issued, the apostille and certified translation, the preparation of the deceased, and flight availability from Baku, which may involve a connection. Where further enquiries into the cause of death are required, or long-haul logistics intervene, it can take longer.

Do the Azerbaijani documents need to be legalised and translated?

Yes. The death certificate is issued in Azerbaijani, so it must be legalised and translated for use in the UK. Azerbaijan is a party to the Hague Apostille Convention, so the documents are legalised with an apostille rather than by a longer legalisation chain.

A certified English translation is then prepared. We arrange both the apostille and the translation as part of the service.

Does the family need to travel to Azerbaijan?

No. We coordinate directly with the funeral director in Azerbaijan, the district Registration Department or ASAN Service, and the airline, so the family does not need to travel or make calls to offices in Baku.

The process is arranged remotely on the basis of a simple written authorisation, and we keep you informed at every stage.

Can we hold a Muslim funeral or a cremation in the UK after repatriation?

Yes. Many families wish to observe an Islamic funeral with prompt burial; a repatriation over this distance rules out a same-day burial, but we work as quickly as the formalities allow and can coordinate with a mosque or Muslim funeral director for a burial soon after arrival. A burial can generally proceed on the apostilled and translated death certificate.

For a cremation in England and Wales, the coroner must first give authority using Cremation Form 6 (in Scotland, the procurator fiscal). We liaise with the coroner's office so this is ready when the deceased arrives.

They brought our loved one home from Egypt

Our loved one died on holiday in Egypt and, as a family of modest means, what felt impossible was made possible. Funero was the only company that didn't ask for money upfront, which gave us time to fundraise — and their quote was more than reasonable. They kept us informed every step, translated everything, and their reps in Egypt worked so hard for us. We can't thank them enough for bringing our loved one home.
